The three of us have arrived in Memphis for the 2025 OSCLG conference (Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender), where we will be presenting a workshop on Slow Leadership. It’s my first time in Memphis so today I took a walk down to the Mississippi River and through some of the downtown area, where I saw the Memphis Pyramid (former concert venue, now a Bass Pro Shops) and walked by the Memphis Cotton Museum, housed in the historic Memphis Cotton Exchange from 1874. We’re looking forward to visiting the National Civil Rights Museum and maybe eating some local barbeque in between our conference sessions. We’re staying in the historic Peabody Hotel, and this evening we witnessed the daily parade of the Peabody Ducks who process from the fountain in the lobby along a red carpet and then onto the elevator where they return to their lodging on the roof of the hotel. Who knew?

A gift of travel is the built-in time to spend together, navigating airplanes and airports and the little things that go wrong along the way. Somehow when you’re with friends, those travel headaches feel more funny than frustrating, knowing that it’s all part of making memories together.

One of the best things about this opportunity in Memphis is that it has prompted us to get to work on something we’ve been talking about for a couple of years, which is the idea of a Slow Leadership card deck. We’ll be debuting the beta version with our colleagues tomorrow and we are so excited to launch it and to receive some feedback from early participants. Stay tuned for more!
